yet pledges 'best tools' for HTML5 Adobe decries Apple's 'walled garden,'

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch says Flash works just fine on the Apple iPhone, thank you very much — and he thinks that's exactly why Apple keeps on denying it access. Speaking at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, he explained his belief that by eliminating Flash, Cupertino is forcing developers to build apps natively for iPhone OS rather than one of Adobe's cross-platform solutions, and thus creating a “walled garden” of applications that users must flock to an iDevice to be able to use. Lyn……
Provides a Block-Dropping Beatdown – Hatetris

'Tetris' celebrated its 25th birthday last fall, and the milestone event coincided with a reassuring scientific study (for chronic geometric gamers, at least). The experiment, conducted by the Mind Research Network, indicated that extensive block-dropping puzzle action can actually “improve critical thinking, planning skills, reasoning and even language.”
Those educational and cognitive benefits will be sorely needed for 'Tetris' fans who attempt to play, or suffer through, Sam Hughes'……

One-half of the worst-kept secret in all of Canada over much of the last year — the HSPA networks being prepped by Bell and Telus — is finally launching in just two short days’ time. Bell has announced that its shiny new 21Mbps airwaves will be available to the public at large starting November 4, along with a host of devices ready to take full advantage of it; perhaps most impressive, though, is that they’ll be covering fully 93 percent of the country’s population out of the gate, which sho……

Hip hip hurray Cobol turns 50
Posted by thumpad.com in Software on October 4, 2009
COBOL celebrated its 50th birthday on September 18, 2009. Many developers see COBOL as a relic, a dying dinosaur, or a stodgy language that has been superseded by more powerful systems. I believe that viewpoint as being uninformed. In honor of COBOL’s 50th birthday, here’s an overview of COBOL’s history and place in the current development landscape.
COBOL’s origins
COBOL was designed by the late, great Grace Hopper. Ms. Hopper had an extraordinary influence on the computing industry, including writing the first compiler, the “A compiler.” In addition, she served in the U.S. Navy, eventually attaining the impressive rank of rear admiral; there is even a U.S. Navy dest……
