for people who like to befriend car dealerships Toyota to launch social network
Posted by thumpad.com in Data, Multimedia, Services, Social Networking on August 18, 2011
Man, social networks have taken on a loose definition as of late, haven't they? Toyota just announced plans to launch one for its customers, and while our initial reaction was an eye-roll and sighs of “what the world needs now,” the truth is that it's really just a system that uses Twitter and Facebook to let you know when something's amiss. Dubbed Toyota Friend (and built on Salesforce.com's private Chatter network), the service will dish up battery power warnings to electric……

A hotly anticipated smartphone with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a “Super” 4.3-inch screen, and a manufacturer-skinned version of Android 2.3 — we must be talking about the Samsung Galaxy S II, right? Not on this occasion, squire. Today we're taking a gander at HTC's Sensation, a handset that's just begun shipping in Europe under a short-term Vodafone exclusive and which should be making its way to T-Mobile in the USA early next month. 500 quid sim-free, HTC Sensation goes on pre-order in the UK
Posted by thumpad.com in General, Multimedia, Portable device., Services on May 12, 2011
The HTC Sensation is the most anticipated droid coming from the Taiwanese company this summer. It's HTC's first dual-core handset and it set to launch in the end of June. UK online retailers are already accepting pre-orders for the Sensation and it will set you back 500 pounds. That's sim-free and unlocked, so it sounds reasonable and it's certainly on par with the Samsung Galaxy SII.
The HTC Sensation has a 1.2 GHz MSM8260 Snapdragon processor, a 4.3″ qHD (540×960) S-LCD display an……

An Italian demonstrator gave us hope, but now we're empty inside — the exceptionally thin 11.6-inch version of Samsung's 9 Series laptop will indeed come with a puny 64GB solid state drive. Well, perhaps empty is a bit of an exaggeration, as the machine's gorgeous duralumin curves fill our hearts with joy, as does the comparatively inexpensive $1,199 price tag that Sammy just confirmed on its website. The Sony Ericsson marketing gurus renamed it the Xperia Play when it finally went official at MWC this year, but the PlayStation connection remains as strong as ever. High Efficiency Video Coding / HEVC / H.265 : Beyond H.264
Posted by thumpad.com in Mobile phones, Multimedia, Software on October 1, 2010
JCT-VC develops next video compression standard
As of September 2010, work is continuing on the new video coding standard, currently known as “High Efficiency Video Coding” (HEVC). A Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) has been set up by ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG. Following a Call for Proposals in January 2010, 27 proposals were submitted to the first meeting of the JCT-VC in April.
Elements of some of these proposals have been combined to develop an initial Test Model, a starting point for development of the new standard. The initial Test Model has similarities to earlier standards such as H.264/AVC, including block-based intra/inter prediction, block transform and entropy coding. New features include increased prediction flexibility, more sophisticated interpolation filters, a wider range of block sizes and new entropy coding schemes.
Coding performance varies across the different proposals. It looks like we might expect to see a 2x compression improvement compared with H.264/AVC (i.e. half the bitrate at the same visual quality), at the expense of a significant increase in computational complexity (perhaps 3x or more).
